What Is Microbiology testing?
Microbiology testing is the use of biological, biochemical or chemical methods in order to detect, identify, or enumerate microorganisms present in products, such as food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and more. It’s used in medical, environmental, agricultural, chemical, and biotechnological fields and helps ensure that products are safe for consumption.
The goal in microbiology testing is to detect and restrict harmful microorganisms that could cause illness or negative reactions in consumers. It is essential for determining spoilage and shelf life, which makes it a pivotal step in food manufacturing.
At Labofine, our number one priority is to keep consumers safe, which is why we only use reliable, qualified practices for testing products. We aim to provide you with accurate answers to protect the public and ensure food and product safety. How Does Microbiology Testing Work?
Microbiology testing can be carried out using a range of different technologies. Two of the most common technologies include traditional culture methods (TCM) and quantitative polymerase-chain reaction (qPCR) analysis.
Microbial cultures work to multiply microorganisms by growing them in a specific culture media, either liquid or solid in controlled laboratory conditions. These tests are used to identify the type of organism present, as well as the number of organisms within the same being tested. It also helps to identify its susceptibility to antimicrobial agents.
qPCR works by amplifying specific sections of either the DNA or RNA present within the sample that are typically characteristic of the microbes that are being tested. It is a much more rapid testing approach than TCM, and has grown in popularity for foods or products with a limited shelf life. In fact, it can be carried out in anywhere from 40 minutes to two hours. Contact our team at Labofine to learn more about our specific testing methods today!
Contaminants May Affect Results
There are a number of contaminants that can potentially alter the results of microbiology testing. At Labofine, we are careful to ensure that we identify any and all of these contaminants and while we are carrying out testing, we have practices in place to ensurenone of the contaminants are present in our testing labs. Possible contaminants include:
- Bacteria
- Endotoxins
- Organic compounds
- Ions
- Chlorine and ammonia
