What Is SPF?

Sun protection factor, otherwise known as SPF, is a quantitative measurement of the effectiveness of a sunscreen formulation. Sunscreens work by absorbing, deactivating, degrading, and reflecting the sun’s rays so that they don’t cause damage to your skin.

In order to be effective in preventing sunburn and other types of skin damage, each sunscreen product should have a range of absorbance between 290 and 400 nm. The SPF in a sunscreen product helps to determine the theoretical amount of time that a person could be exposed to the sun before their skin sustains a sunburn or other types of sun damage. For instance, a product with an SPF of 30 would allow a person to stay in the sun approximately 30 times longer than they could without using the product. However, in order to be able to make this claim, sunscreens and SPF levels need to be professionally tested first.
